    2021 was unlike any other. The world got vaccinated, or parts of it did.  Hospitalization rates went up, down and up again. 2022 began year 3 of the pandemic and brought with it serious challenges including record global inflation due in part to the effects of the global pandemic and the great resignation. This year, however, has also brought back some normalcy. Creative Pros are generally optimistic. The good news is that visuals drive communications, whether editorial or creative.

    Over the last 9 years, we have asked Creative Pros a mix of questions to identify what is working and emerging trends. Our surveys have identified the growth and shift to subscriptions, the growth in multi-media licensing, the emergence of free content, the need for vertical content and this year, new questions about new creation tools and the metaverse. Last year, we included customer trends to be aware of, and have continued that this year.

    As the quantity of visual assets needed increases exponentially (for images, video, illustrations), budgets are expected to remain flat. With this increased pressure on price, four companies that provide free (CC0) content have jumped into the top 10 list of favorite resources. Custom content production is emerging as a real competitor to stock. Search is still a significant issue for buyers. Learn about these topics and more.     Forbes has described 2023 as the "best of times, in the worst of times."  This year's respondents would likely agree. Creative Pros face many challenges including having to do more with less, declining budgets, and longer times to find content.

    There is energy and enthusiasm for AI, with the hope that this technology will help address long-standing issues for creative pros with search and finding the right image.

    While there are many outstanding questions about generative AI regarding copyright, creative pros particularly in advertising and marketing communications, are also hopeful that generative AI will be a solution to more easily and quickly create the content they need.

    This year's survey will answer the same questions as in the past plus a few new questions.

    As in the past few years, we have added a section that addresses many of the market trends and drivers impacting the industry.
