    2021 was unlike any other. The world got vaccinated, or parts of it did.  Hospitalization rates went up, down and up again. 2022 began year 3 of the pandemic and brought with it serious challenges including record global inflation due in part to the effects of the global pandemic and the great resignation. This year, however, has also brought back some normalcy. Creative Pros are generally optimistic. The good news is that visuals drive communications, whether editorial or creative.

    Over the last 9 years, we have asked Creative Pros a mix of questions to identify what is working and emerging trends. Our surveys have identified the growth and shift to subscriptions, the growth in multi-media licensing, the emergence of free content, the need for vertical content and this year, new questions about new creation tools and the metaverse. Last year, we included customer trends to be aware of, and have continued that this year.

    This year’s report shows continuing change in the market. Free images are now a staple for buyers with 57% saying they use free images in at least some of their work. Custom Content seems to be emerging as a new service from stock providers, and at affordable prices. While most users still buy custom content from creatives and productions groups, it is still a small minority that purchase custom from stock agencies.
